Printable Halloween treasure hunt: how to run one for ages 4-10

A treasure hunt is kids' favorite Halloween activity: it mixes mystery, moving around and a reward. Done right, it lasts 45 minutes and takes 10 to prepare.
How many clues do you need?
Between 8 and 12 clues is ideal. Fewer and it's over too soon; more and little ones get tired. Each clue leads to the next hiding spot, and the last one to the treasure.
Riddles that fit their age
Under 6, kids can't read yet: use picture clues (a drawing of the fridge, the bathtub…). From 7, rhyming riddles are perfect: they make kids think without getting stuck.
The best hiding spots (and ones to avoid)
Pick spots at a child's height: fridge, washing machine, shoes, sofa, toy box. Avoid the oven, stairs and windows.
The treasure and the grand finale
The treasure doesn't need to be big: some candy, a small book, a certificate with the child's name. Add a magic word to piece together to open the chest: it works every time.
