How to host Halloween at home with kids: the complete guide
5 min read
Kids don't need a big party to remember Halloween. A little atmosphere, two or three well-chosen games and a fun snack are plenty. Here's a simple plan for ages 4 to 10.
Set the mood in 15 minutes
Atmosphere matters more than decorations. Dim the lights, turn on a few LED candles and put a pumpkin or two on the table. A soft playlist of animated movie music does the rest.
- Orange or purple string lights
- Bat silhouettes cut from black paper
- A white sheet over a chair for the resident ghost
The ideal evening program
Alternate a calm moment, an active moment and an all-together moment. Kids stay hooked without getting overexcited before bed.
- 5 pm: costumes and Halloween coloring
- 6 pm: the treasure hunt around the house
- 6:45 pm: monster snack time
- 7:15 pm: bingo, parents-vs-kids quiz and awards
Games that are spooky… but not too spooky
Under 7, real fear often spoils the night. Go for mystery and laughter instead: shy ghosts, riddles to solve, silly dares. Kids love feeling brave without actually being scared.
A fun, healthy Halloween snack
Banana ghosts with chocolate chips and clementines dressed as pumpkins with a celery stem: easy to make with kids, and fewer sweets.
